The bronchus is the part of the respiratory system that connects the trachea to the lung parenchyma. It is composed of an extensive branching system of airway passages that transmit the air from the atmosphere to the alveoli. By definition, bronchi are airways with cartilaginous walls. The amount of cartilage in the walls of bronchi progressively decreases and eventually disappears by the time the bronchi divide into airways of about 1 mm diameter. The smaller airways that lack cartilage are called bronchioles.
